The STEM Scholars Symposium is BACK! In partnership with the Colorado School of Mines Graduate Student Government, the symposium is an opportunity for students in grades 8-11 who are interested in science to share innovative projects and ideas related to areas of personal interest and research. Creativity, originality, and rigor will all be celebrated as students present their work both formally and informally. Special recognition will be given by CSM graduate students for outstanding projects.
This program will run similarly to a professional conference to prepare students for other forums in which they might present future work.
APRIL 18TH
8:30AM-2:00PM
PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY
Students must be in grades 8-11 and be of high interest or high ability (currently have an ALP, be in G/T, or participate in CBK) in interdisciplinary thinking involving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The Symposium is open to all students. In addition to submitting a registration form, students must submit a proposal for consideration to be accepted.
All 14 departments at Mines are expected to be represented, with fields such as:
Chemical Engineering Aerospace/Aeronautics/Astrophysics Biochemistry Metallurgy and Materials Engineering Mining and Petroleum Energy Economics Physics Biomedical Research Nanotechnology Applied Mathematics Computer Science Environmental Chemistry and Sciences Architecture Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Geology/Geophysics Hydrology Nuclear Engineering
PROPOSAL MUST INCLUDE:
Þ Your identifying information (see Registration Form)
Þ Your guiding research question
Þ A brief description of your project (no more than 100 words)
Þ What motivated you to pursue this research and why you would like to share it with other future scientists (no more than 100 words)
PRESENTATION FORMAT OPTIONS
Poster—the Science Fair Model Participants will be scheduled in a room where they are able to set up their projects and an accompanying tri-fold board summarizing their work. Students staff their table for the scheduled session, then attend the other sessions to browse what other scientists are up to. A great way to learn about related projects and new subjects not explored!
Panel Discussion—the Group Project Participants may propose in small groups of 4-6. 20-minute sessions will be attended by other participants interested in your topic. This is a chance to share findings, lessons learned, and exciting things you observed so that others can learn from your experience. It is also an opportunity to challenge ideas and discuss scientific and social implications of your research. Discussion questions will be provided and discussions moderated by a university member.
PowerPoint Presentation—the Solo Scientist Participants are assigned a 10-minute presentation slot during the morning. Talks will be attended by other participants interested in your topic. This format must include a prepared PowerPoint of 8-15 slides only. Presentations will be moderated by university community.
