Privacy Statement

The Center for Bright Kids is committed to a privacy policy in keeping with the privacy guidelines published by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (including COPPA-The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) and other Internet privacy advocacy groups. By using this site and the services connected to it, you agree to comply with the terms of the policy. To better meet customer concerns or changes in the law we might, from time to time, modify the terms of our Privacy Policy. Continued use of the site constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.

What we do:

CBK collects information from parent(s) or legal guardians who choose to register their children for the Western Academic Talent Search, Summer Programs, and other educational programs. The following paragraphs disclose CBK's information gathering and dissemination practices.

How do we collect data:

We collect data through our website registration system. We require parental consent on the section of registration materials. You must mark the box that says, "I certify that the following parent/guardian has granted permission for the above student to participate." You must also e-sign your name. The registration process cannot continue until this information is marked.

What information do we collect:

We gather two types of information at our site: personally identifiable information and non-personally identifiable information. Personally identifiable information includes first and last name, street address, phone numbers, email addresses, financial information for the purposes of billing and payment, and credit card information for payment. Non-personally identifiable information includes sex, the name of the school the student attends, ethnic background (optional), birthdate, qualifying test and score, test date and site selection, grade in school, primary language spoken at home (optional), household size and income (optional), parent name, and course choice. We only collect information that is relevant for the purposes associated with the Center for Bright Kids programs.

Who collects the information:

CBK staff and contracted data center employees collect and use the information for the talent search and educational programs processes.

What do we do with the information:

The information we collect is used to enter the student applicant into the Western Academic Talent Search or Summer Programs, and to send parent(s) or legal guardian(s) information about additional services and programs offered by CBK. For students registering for WATS in grades 6-9, the information will be sent to the Educational Testing Service (ETS) for the SAT I: Reasoning Test or to ACT for the ACT Assessment per the student's selection. Information about the student enrolled in the 3rd-6th Grade Talent Search will be forwarded to ETS for the PSAT 8/9 test. Non-personally identifiable information and additional demographic information we collect might be used for research purposes.

CBK will, occasionally, provide names and addresses of individuals within our database to third parties. CBK has been highly selective to whom we will release addresses. The requesting program must be geared for academically talented youth and unique in nature, i.e., a program that the CBK student would benefit from academically and a program that they may not find out about otherwise. Students who have indicated a "no" in the Information Release field on the Talent Search application materials are excluded.

The CBK site may contain links to other sites. CBK is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of such websites.

What specific steps do we take with children under the age of 13:

We are firmly committed to protecting the privacy rights of any child and specifically those rights as outlined by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA.) CBK will not collect/save data from children under the age of 13 without the express consent of the child's parent(s) or legal guardian(s). This consent is confirmed by a parent signature allowing student participation at the end of each application and additionally through the use of a credit card associated with the application process if a program fee is required.

What to do if you wish to review your information or ask to have information removed:

To review any information about your child please contact CBK. You have the right to ask CBK to not release your information. By marking a "no" in the Information Release field of the Talent Search application form(s), you will be excluded from any of these mailings. If you wish to have your information removed from our database you must notify us in writing of your request.
